It sounds so professional and high-level, just people in suits crunching numbers to make sure a refrigerator costs less to land in a kitchen.
Then I looked at my phone to check the delivery status of a small kitchen appliance I ordered from an online market here. It’s been sitting at the distribution center for three days. Seeing the contrast between that global-scale ‘logistics optimization’ and the reality of my package stuck in some sorting facility is just funny to me. I’m not exactly managing a global supply chain, but the struggle feels surprisingly similar in a very small, annoying way.
The mystery of the distribution center
I’ve been reading about how some companies like Oasis Market are using their own software, something they call ‘Oasis Route,’ to automate their inventory and figure out the best paths for delivery trucks. It sounds perfect on paper. You reduce the distance, you save money, and presumably, the customer gets their stuff faster. But then I think about the times I’ve tracked my own packages. Why does it leave the hub in Seoul, go to a city three hours away, and then come back to my local neighborhood hub, only to spend another twenty-four hours ‘out for delivery’?
I’m sure there’s a mathematical reason for it—maybe it’s more cost-effective to group all these items together even if they take a weird detour. But when you’re the one waiting, you don’t really care about their cost-reduction metrics. You just want the item. Sometimes I wonder if these systems are actually optimized for the business or if they just happen to make sense for the logistics provider’s bottom line. It’s a bit frustrating when the ‘logic’ of the system leaves me without my package for an extra day or two.
Trying to understand the math behind it all
My nephew is currently a high school senior and he’s been obsessed with Physics 2. He told me he’s writing a report on how to optimize logistics systems using the principles of momentum and impulse he learned in class. It’s cute, really. He thinks he can solve the problems of delivery delays by applying formulas. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that no matter how clean the physics looks on his paper, the real-world factor of a delivery driver being stuck in traffic or a sorting machine breaking down at 2 AM is going to throw off his variables immediately.
There’s this weird gap between the theory of ‘optimization’ and the reality of human labor. You can automate everything, but people are still the ones physically moving the boxes. Even at my job, we sometimes talk about streamlining our internal processes, and it always ends up being more complicated than the initial chart suggested. We add a step to save time, but then that step creates a new bottleneck that we didn’t account for. It’s a never-ending cycle of trying to fix things that weren’t really broken in the first place.
Is there ever a perfect way to ship things?
I honestly don’t know if the ‘perfect’ logistics system exists. Maybe it’s not meant to be perfect, just ‘good enough’ to keep the prices from rising too high. I’ve noticed that even when I pay extra for faster shipping, sometimes it arrives at the exact same time as the free standard option. I once paid about 3,000 won for express handling on a small item, only for it to be delayed by a weather event, which is nobody’s fault, but it still felt like a waste of money.
Now, whenever I order something, I just try to forget I ordered it for a few days. If it arrives early, great. If not, it’s just one of those things. I’m starting to think that expecting things to move efficiently through a city of millions is just an optimistic fantasy. I guess the big companies like LG have their own headaches, too. Even with a brand new factory, there’s always going to be some unforeseen variable in the supply chain. At least I’m not the one who has to explain to a board of directors why the delivery was late.
