My Shein Package Took Longer Than Expected and Customs Was the Culprit

I was really excited to get some new clothes from Shein, especially since there was a big sale going on. I placed my order on April 28th, and the app said it would arrive by May 7th. That seemed reasonable, so I didn’t think too much about it. But then, the delivery date kept getting pushed back. First it was May 9th, then May 12th, and it just kept going. I started to get a bit annoyed because I had plans for some of these outfits.

I tried to track it, but the information was kind of confusing. It would say ‘Shipped,’ then ‘In Transit,’ then suddenly ‘Customs Clearance.’ That’s when I realized that customs was the main hold-up. It felt like my package was stuck there forever. The app finally updated to say it cleared customs on May 15th. That was already way past the original estimated date.

After it cleared customs, it was handed over to a local courier, Hanjin in my case. That took another day or two to get to my house. So, from the moment it was shipped, it took almost three weeks. I know direct purchases from overseas can take time, but this felt particularly long. I remember reading something about how customs clearance can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on the package and what’s being imported. For Shein, since it’s usually a lot of small items, I guess they get scrutinized more, or maybe there are just so many packages going through that it causes delays. I wasn’t expecting anything like perfume or electronics, just clothes and accessories, so I thought it would be straightforward.

I looked up some general information about customs and shipping after my experience. It seems like the process involves several steps: the item leaves the seller’s warehouse, travels to the destination country, goes through customs inspection and clearance, and then is handed over to a local delivery service. Each of these stages can have its own delays. For example, if there are a lot of packages, customs can get backed up. Sometimes, if they need to inspect an item more closely, it takes longer. I think my package might have been part of a larger batch that had to be processed, or maybe it was just randomly selected for a more thorough check. I didn’t get any notices about needing to pay extra duties or anything, which was a relief, but the waiting was definitely the hardest part.

It made me wonder if ordering from places like Shein is always going to be a gamble with delivery times. I’ve had other overseas orders arrive much faster, within a week or so. This time, the wait was long enough that I started to question if it would ever arrive. It’s not like I could easily cancel it once it was in transit. The original estimated cost for shipping was pretty low, probably around $5, so I guess that’s part of the trade-off. You get cheap clothes, but you might have to wait a while. I’m not sure if I’d order from Shein again if I needed something by a specific date. Maybe for general shopping when I’m not in a hurry, but for any kind of event, it’s too risky.

Thinking back, the original estimated delivery time of 9 days from order date seemed overly optimistic. It’s probably more realistic to expect 2-3 weeks for packages coming through that kind of express direct purchase route, especially if there are any customs delays. The Hanjin delivery part was actually pretty quick once it got moving again, only about a day from when it was officially handed over. So, the main bottleneck was definitely the customs clearance process. It’s hard to know exactly what goes on in there, but it certainly added a significant amount of time to my order.

  1. The ‘Customs Clearance’ label just sounds so…opaque. It’s interesting how much of the delay was truly about the physical inspection versus the courier logistics.
