Trying to figure out US customs for a small online order, and it’s more confusing than I thought
I was trying to buy some stuff online from a US website. It wasn’t a huge order, just a few items for personal use, but I started wondering about customs duties. You know, the usual fear of getting hit with unexpected charges when it arrives.
I remembered seeing some general info about de minimis values for imports, like amounts below which you don’t pay duties. For the US, I think it’s usually around $800 for express shipments, but I wasn’t sure if that applied to everything or if there were exceptions. My order was definitely below that, but still, you never really know until it’s too late. It’s like, do they check every single package? Or is it more random?
I found some articles online, including some official-looking government sites and also some blogs. One mentioned KOTRA, which seems to be like a trade promotion agency. They were apparently holding some sessions for companies dealing with US customs issues, especially with all the talk about tariffs and trade tensions. It seemed aimed more at businesses, though, not really individuals like me just trying to get a few things.
There was also a mention of Alukko and how they were getting into the US market for solar products, and how the previous administration’s tariffs made importing difficult. They had to set up local production to avoid those issues. That made me think, if a company needs to do all that, what hope does an individual have? Though, in their case, it was about exporting to the US and dealing with their import duties on raw materials perhaps. My situation was the opposite – importing from the US.
I also stumbled upon a Q&A on Naver Knowledge iN from a customs broker. They talked about personal use items under $150 being duty-free. That sounded more like my situation. They even mentioned a small fee, like 35 KRW, for some kind of processing, but it was really minimal. This was helpful because it gave me a concrete number to work with. My order was well under $150, so theoretically, I shouldn’t have to pay anything extra. It made me feel a bit more at ease.
Still, there’s that nagging feeling. What if the website I ordered from misclassified the items? What if the shipping company has its own policies? It feels like a bit of a gamble. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see when it arrives. It’s not worth paying for a customs broker for such a small amount, but the uncertainty is kind of annoying. I’ve learned that for personal purchases under a certain threshold, it’s generally fine, but the exact rules and how they’re applied can still feel a bit murky.

The Alukko example really highlighted how complex the supply chain can be, especially when tariffs are involved. It’s fascinating to see how a single trade policy decision can ripple out and affect even small-scale imports.
