When the customs notice arrived for a package I never received

That strange notification from the customs office

I was just going through my phone when a text notification popped up, looking all official and slightly intimidating. It mentioned customs duties for an overseas shipment. I had ordered a few things from AliExpress a while back, but honestly, I had already given up on that package. It hadn’t arrived after weeks of waiting, and according to the tracking, it looked like it was just stuck in limbo somewhere. I figured it was lost in the vast network of international logistics, so I had already gone through the process of getting a refund through their support chat. The money was back in my account, and I had moved on to other things.

The confusing math of import duties

When I saw the notice asking for tax payment, I felt a weird mix of confusion and annoyance. I know the rules generally say that if your purchase is under 150 dollars, you shouldn’t be paying customs duty. My order was definitely under that threshold, maybe around 80 or 90 dollars or so. Why would they be sending me a bill for something that didn’t even show up? I spent a good twenty minutes trying to look up similar situations online, but all I found were vague government press releases about import policies and crackdowns on illegal goods. They talk a lot about ‘securing the border’ and ‘protecting the economy,’ which sounds fine in theory, but it doesn’t help me figure out why my missing plastic gadgets are suddenly attracting the attention of tax officials.

Should I pay or just let it go?

Now I’m stuck wondering if this is even worth the effort. If I pay the duty, do I actually get the item? Or is this just a way for the system to claw back some revenue on a package that’s already effectively ‘dead’ in the mail? I thought about calling the local customs office, but I’ve dealt with government bureaucracy enough to know that the wait times on the phone are usually brutal. I still have the reference number from the text, but the thought of sitting on hold for 30 minutes just to ask about a 20-dollar tax bill on a 90-dollar item that I’ve already been refunded for feels like a massive waste of a Saturday. Part of me thinks it’s easier to just ignore the text and let them dispose of it, but then I get that nagging anxiety—is this going to affect my future shipments? Will I get flagged for not clearing this parcel?

Dealing with the lack of clarity

It’s funny how a simple shopping experience can suddenly spiral into something you feel you need to ‘manage.’ I checked the status of similar past orders from around the same time—those arrived in about 10 to 14 days, and this one has been hanging around for over a month. There’s no clear instruction in the text about what happens if you don’t pay, other than a general threat of ‘disposal.’ The lack of a clear, simple path forward is what gets to me. It’s not like I’m trying to avoid paying what’s fair, but the system feels incredibly opaque for a regular person just trying to buy a few affordable items. I’m still staring at the screen, and I honestly have no idea what I’m going to do tomorrow morning when the office opens back up. I’ll probably end up doing nothing, which feels like a decision in itself, but it leaves me feeling pretty unsettled about ordering from these platforms again in the near future.
